Using YouTube to Boost Search Results. The benefits of using videos to promote your brand and your business are immense, but one neglected tactic is to use them to improve your site’s rankings in the search results.
Most of the time, when somebody shares a YouTube video, the link goes back to YouTube.
This makes it easier for people to find your video doing a search on YouTube, but it doesn’t make it any easier for people to find your site when they do a search on Google. Thankfully, there are things you can do to change that.
Changing the Embed Code
Basically, all you need to do is edit the embed code to include a link back to your site, and then make this embed code available below the video on your site. That way, any time somebody shares the video when they find it on your site, they will also be linking back to you.
The biggest benefit of this is that your web page will take the credit for the video, instead of YouTube. Your goal should be to attract visitors to your site, not to get distracted on YouTube and never come back.
Promoting the Video
Altering the embed code, however, is only half the battle. The altered embed code is only available on your site. If the video goes viral on YouTube, that’s great, but even then it won’t be sending any direct links back to your page. If your site doesn’t already have a great deal of traffic, the linking version isn’t going to get shared. You’ll need to promote it directly, preferably before it actually goes live. There are many ways to accomplish this, but here’s one really powerful method.
This may sound old fashioned, and there’s certainly some truth to that, but it can definitely work if you know what you are doing. It’s an email campaign. If you don’t have any subscribers and no access to email lists, the best thing you can do is start looking for bloggers.
Do a search for keywords that indicate an interest in your topic, and look for as many bloggers as you can. Copy down their email addresses, along with their names, and draft up a template email. Don’t copy the following, but take it as an example of what you should be going for.
“Hi how’s it going? I noticed that you’ve written quite a bit about [subject] and I was wondering if you could give me a few pointers. Here’s a video I’m working on. Let me know what you think. Basically my goal is to make the kind of video people like you would want to share with their audience, so I’d appreciate anything you have to say.”
Doing this helps you perfect the video by getting advice from other players in your industry. By involving them in the process, you make them feel more attached to the outcome and more likely to help you promote it once it’s finished. That way, once it goes live, all you need to do is let them know about it. Most of the people who helped will be glad to share the video on their site, which will help get the ball rolling.
